NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR • New York Post • Marie Claire • Self • BookRiot Hi! I’m Seth! I was asked to describe my book, Yearbook, for the inside flap (which is a gross phrase) and for websites and shit like that, so… here it goes!!! Yearbook is a collection of true stories that I desperately hope are just funny at worst, and life-changingly amazing at best. (I understand that it’s likely the former, which is a fancy “book” way of saying “the first one.”)  I talk about my grandparents, doing stand-up comedy as a teenager, bar mitzvahs, and Jewish summer camp, and tell way more stories about doing drugs than my mother would like. I also talk about some of my adventures in Los Angeles, and surely say things about other famous people that will create a wildly awkward conversation for me at a party one day. I hope you enjoy the book should you buy it, and if you don’t enjoy it, I’m sorry. If you ever see me on the street and explain the situation, I’ll do my best to make it up to you. *I was beaten by Bill O’Reilly, which really sucks. Read more

REVIEW

If you’re a Seth Rogen fan… and have seen many of his guest appearances on talk shows over the years… you’ll recognize that side of him through a clearer prism… than his movie characters. He shares his background… family… friends and enemies… in short bursts of storytelling. The book itself is much shorter than you anticipate based on the published page count… because… VOILA!... The pages are smaller. His ever present snarky personality is abundant throughout… and yet… he can’t totally abstain from brief feelings of love and adoration for family members such as his Grandparents… Parents… and Sister. As most comedians he was not overly popular growing up… was embarrassed about his body… more introverted than just plain shy regarding girls… and always seemed to be worried about being beat up… even after taking karate classes. The book has many clever stories that fit right into scenes in his movies… but there are low points where he feels the need to make political statements… that could have easily been left out of the book and kept the feel good… and or “isn’t fact funnier than fiction” vibe flowing… but no… he couldn’t resist. Such as the screed regarding his life affirming love of marijuana: “I used to think a lot about why I smoke weed, but, honestly, I stopped. Because I realized the only reason I was thinking about it was because of the negative stigma, and the only reason it has a negative stigma is that it makes it easier for white people to control nonwhite people, which unfortunately is also the reason for a ****** of other things.” Boy… that was a well-placed humorous revelation to keep the entertainment value of the book sky high… and I don’t mean Seth’s kind of high. One of the funniest and weirdest stories revolves around a visit with Judd Apatow to Tom Cruise’s house during the time frame that Cruise was jumping up and down on couches on TV and espousing Scientology… Well… I’ll let Seth describe Tom’s beliefs: “FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON’T KNOW, SCIENTOLOGY IS A RELIGION/CULT/PYRAMID SCHEME INVENTED BY COKE-ADDLED/MORON/SCIENCE-FICTION WRITER L. RON HUBBARD. BASICALLY, SCIENTOLOGISTS BELIEVE THAT SEVENTY-FIVE MILLION YEARS AGO, THERE WAS A “GALACTIC CONFEDERACY” THAT WAS RULED BY AN EVIL ALIEN NAMED XENU. XENU BROUGHT BILLIONS OF HIS ALIEN FRIENDS TO EARTH, PUT THEM IN A VOLCANO, AND EXPLODED THEM WITH A HYDROGEN BOMB.” There is more… but I’ve got to get back to the planet earth and finish this book review! Along with a fixation on weed… there is a dual fixation on porn. The reader will learn throughout the book that Seth started at the age of thirteen in standup… and about the same age with drugs and alcohol… though he has gotten away from alcohol to give complete dedication to drugs… and not just weed. At most times… the shtick is fun… and always absorbed with drugs and sexual content… but as mentioned earlier the author needlessly at times makes Hollywood elitist statements. Is it worth the time and effort? If you don’t offend easily… and you don’t mind being proselytized periodically… it is short and OK.
