REVIEW

Can readers fall for inanimate objects? This reader certainly did for Res (short for Resilience), a Mars rover readying for his mission. Getting Res ready for his job is no ordinary undertaking. Two scientists, Xander and Rania, equipped with hazmat suits, put their hearts and souls into preparing Res and an accompanying drone (Fly) for the task of going to Mars and recovering a previous rover. Though Xander and Rania talk to Res, he can't answer, despite having a strong desire to communicate with them. I especially liked how author Jasmine Warga researched previous missions in writing this book. While she used some creative license in some instances, much of the story was science-based. One of the delightful fictional angles that Warga pursued was to give Resilience human emotions. Another backup rover named Journey fails to understand these feelings and encourages Res to use logic to make decisions. The story spans many years as Rania's daughter, Sophie, writes letters to Res following his exploits. She shares personal details as she grows from childhood to adulthood. There were so many things to like about this book. Though written for middle grades, I think it would appeal to a broader audience.
