Don't miss this New York Times bestselling "impossible to put down" (Buzzfeed) novel with deadly stakes, thrilling twists, and juicy secrets -- perfect for fans of One of Us is Lying and Knives Out . Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why -- or even who Tobias Hawthorne is. To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch -- and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive. **  Avery's story continues in The Hawthorne Legacy and The Final Gambit Read more

REVIEW

I devoured this book in two days. I couldn't put it down. The Hawthorne brothers are a force to be reckoned with. Though we never get to formally "meet" their grandfather, it's easy to tell he's a bit of an oddball but, also a genius of sorts. There's always a puzzle to solve and a game to play—from the way his will is written to the letters he leaves for each grandson and for Avery. Barnes blew me away with this story. There are so many twists and turns, some the I anticipated but most that caught me totally off guard. I spent the entire novel trying to figure out how Tobias Hawthorne was tied to Avery, only to have all my theories blown out of the water by the time I got to the end of the book. I enjoyed the characters in this and the development and progression of their storylines was not only realistic but felt right for each one. The brothers have such distinct personalities, they're very different from one another, but they're thick as thieves and close knit. The same could be said about Avery and her sister as well. I made the mistake of bringing this book on vacation with me, and leaving the second one at home, and this was clearly a mistake. I've been eager to get started on the next part of this story, because I have to know what lies ahead for Xander and what kind of chaos will ensue for this family. Five stars to this novel!
