I have just finished this wonderful book and felt I had to write a review immediately. This book, more than any other I have read on FDR, presents an intimate and personal account of the man. It primarily focuses on the pre-presidential years and his battle with infantile paralysis. Of course, it’s got the facts and dates associated with the era but its value, I think, is the microscopic approach to the emotions, hardships and challenges faced by Franklin, Eleanor and their entourage. What makes the book especially appealing are the anecdotes and stories peppered throughout the book and especially the understanding of how this horrible disease actually strengthened FDRs character and resolve. Needless to say, I highly recommend this book.
