Nora McInerny does not dance like no one is watching. In fact, she dances like everyone is watching, which is to say, she does not dance at all. A bestselling author and host of the beloved podcast Terrible, Thanks for Asking , she has captured the hearts of millions with her disarming and earnest approach to discussing grief and loss. Now, with Bad Vibes Only , she turns her eye on our aggressively, oppressively optimistic culture, our obsession with self-improvement, and what it really means to live authentically in the online age. In essays that revisit her cringey past and anticipate her rapidly approaching, early middle-aged future, McInerny lays bare her own chaos, inviting us to drop the façade of perfection and embrace the truth: that we are all—at best—slightly unhinged. Socrates claimed that the unexamined life is not worth living. Bad Vibes Only is for people who have taken that dictum a bit too far—the overthinkers, the analyzers, the recovering Girl Bosses, and the burned-out personal brand—reminding us that a life worth living is about more than just “good vibes.” Read more

REVIEW

In a world of double tapping, subscribing, judging, competitive parenting, and phone addictions, Nora parlays her experiences into relatable stories that make you feel like you are sitting down with a long lost friend. Her confessions often had me questioning if I was reading my own diary (except that I dramatically tried to burn them over 20 years ago and when that didn’t work, shredded them by hand and disbursed amongst various midwestern dumpsters.) This book is her best one yet (although I have not read Hot Young Windows) and it shines like the star she is without the filters. Because normal people can be absolute rock stars without the façade of curated content and perfection. The first memoir I read was Jenny Lawson’s Let’s Pretend this Never Happened which smashed down the door and took the hands of people who were huddled in corners stewing in the depths of their own anxiety and depression. It gave them a voice… we can talk about this?? And not be judged?? Nora has done the same with grief and continues to address mental health like Lawson and actually just being human (see Terrible, Thanks for Asking.) Bad Vibes is super funny, you will probably spill tears from laughing reading about the CPA and most definitely you will be producing heart-wrenching tears of fear, sadness, and relief reading Anything Can Happen. Because we are all just humans doing our best. To quote Nora “We are all just a bunch of feelings in skin suits doing our best impression of capable and okay grownups.” Most inspirational and motivating for me at this time in my life is Something Substantial which has me questioning my relationship with my phone, while reading the book from my phone. This book was just that - substantial - and like all amazing books, I didn’t want it to end.
